Four Qualities of the Humanism Lifeway:

O04 Humanism

Philosophy emphasizes human reason, ethics, and the pursuit of human well-being without reliance on supernatural beliefs.

Humanism, as a philosophical and ethical worldview, represents a diverse and intellectually engaged group in the United States. At its core, humanism emphasizes the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals, promoting reason, compassion, and secularism as guiding principles. Humanists place human beings at the center of their moral and ethical framework, seeking to address societal challenges and promote a more inclusive and equitable society.

Advocates for the Protection and Advancement of  Rights

Humanism in the United States has a rich history dating back to the Renaissance, but it gained prominence as a distinct movement in the 20th century. Humanist organizations, such as the American Humanist Association, have played a pivotal role in advocating for secularism, civil liberties, and the separation of church and state. They work to protect and advance the rights of non-religious individuals while also championing issues like reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ equality, and social justice.

Values Reason, Evidenced-based Thinking, and Discourse

Humanists value reason and evidence-based thinking, rejecting supernatural beliefs and religious dogma. They often support scientific education, critical thinking, and secular ethics as foundations for ethical decision-making. Humanist communities across the country provide spaces for like-minded individuals to engage in intellectual discourse, volunteerism, and activism in pursuit of a more rational and humane society.

Embraces a Naturalistic Worldview

Secular humanism, a prevalent form of humanism in the United States, explicitly embraces a naturalistic worldview, asserting that ethical and moral principles can be derived from human experience and reason, rather than from religious texts or divine revelation. Secular humanists advocate for the separation of religion from government institutions and public policies, safeguarding the rights of those who identify as non-religious or secular.

Shares Ethical Values, Secular Spirituality, and Interfaith Dialogue

Humanism also encompasses a wide spectrum of ethical values, including secular spirituality, social justice, environmentalism, and interfaith dialogue. While many humanists are non-religious or atheist, others may identify with different religious or spiritual traditions but share humanist values centered on human well-being and ethics.

Summary

In summary, humanism in the United States represents a diverse and vibrant community of individuals who champion human dignity, reason, and secularism as the foundation for ethical and moral decision-making. They actively engage in social and political advocacy, promoting a more inclusive, rational, and compassionate society while working to protect the rights of non-religious individuals and advocate for a separation between religious beliefs and government institutions.
